THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS OF ST. JOHN'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN
Flooding the sanctuary with a beautiful peaceful light, the stained-glass windows of St John’s Evangelical Lutheran church create an atmosphere of calmness yet is full of dignity and powerful messages. The windows were designed and produced for the sanctuary by one of the oldest and largest American studios, the George Hardy Payne Stained Glass Studio of Paterson, New Jersey. They were installed when the church building was constructed in 1927/28. Twelve pictorials of Jesus Christ, from His birth to His ascension into heaven, depict the highlights of His life and teaching. Above the altar in the sanctuary this window depicts the Ascension. On the east and west walls there is the Angel of Music window and Christ’s Baptism. All these pictorials are in the Tiffany style, unique to American stained glass. They have attained local prominence, and visitors can’t help but appreciate the beauty of the glasswork and the spiritual messages. St. John’s is blessed that the Herr family graced this congregation with this precious gift. It is our sincere hope that all who see these windows will reflect on their meaning and significance and offer their own prayer of thanks for the gift of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. To make an appointment to have a tour of these windows, call the church office 717-684-2763. |
